Any one interested in population genetics and molecular evolution should... Or well MUST read this book. Classical population genetics is fine, but Coalescent Theory is taken over the place as a standard tool and theory for almost every element for microevolutionary dynamics. From population delimitation to species inference and species delineation, coalescent methods are being used and new methods are based on it. So, it's better to start learning it right away!
I'm puzzled by a previous reviewer who complained about a lack of precise definitions and notation. I'm a professional mathematician and I think its a very clear text. It may be true that there are not a lot of rigorous proofs, but that is an asset in an introductory text. Wakeley includes many references to more technical treatments if these are desired.Overall the writing is excellent, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in population genetics.
An elegantly written book!
As a biologist with little background in statistics, I appreciated how the book breaks down the derivation of all formulae without sacrificing detail. This is an excellent introduction to the coalescent process and "frame of mind", with basic and more advanced concepts. I would have liked some worked examples of certain concepts in action - e.g. basic model algorithms - but those are easy enough to find online.
Wakeley's book is a great resource for teaching yourself what is the coalescent, why do we need it, how do we use it, and how it is transforming population genetics. The mathematical proofs won't satisfy the "purists" but they are easy to follow and understand given one has an understanding of calculus and probability theory. I would recommend this book to any grad student in population genetics, conservation genetics, molecular ecology, etc.

This is an excellent introduction to Coalescent Theory. Even though it covers some of the basic mathematics, one with a good foundation in standard population genetics and statistics/mathematics would definitely get more out of this book.
This book is typical of mathematical biology books that intend to introduce a topic in, say, population genetics and that fail to be rigorous or complete. There are no precise definitions, firm notations, or theorems with proofs. What passes for proof is vague and incomplete. In other words, the book does not put the subject, coalescent theory, on a firm foundation.There is only one significant application in the first three chapters, a comparison of Neanderthal genetics to human genetics. While this is an interesting application, the presentation is not convincing.There are no exercises, and the book is certainly not suited as a textbook, though it is not appropriate for self-study either because of the mathematical weaknesses mentioned above and because there is no overview of the power of coalescent theory that suggests what rewards the reader will experience by understanding it.The book would have benefitted from having a mathematician as a coauthor.
