Drupal 8 Explained is a hands-on book. Don't just read it. Use your computer, follow along and develop a Drupal 8 site. These authors know how to present understandable instruction on a very powerful content management system.
This is a good resource - if you need to get into Drupal 8 quickly, this is a superb option.Drupal 8 explained covers a brief background, installing, setting up, and takes you through basics you need for your content / themes / etc. It's up to you to continue on with your Drupal 8 experience.I already had my own web server and started to test install Drupal 8 with the Documents available on the Drupal 8 site. I think this allowed me to easily pass to page 80 something. I did not use their recommend host. CMS systems, forums, and other canned software such as Drupal, Simple Machines Forums, Joomla ... etc. so these are not entirely new tech to me. In my opinion, this will help someone that doesn't know how to do this stuff. Expect it to take a bit more time ... but it is understandable to someone new.This book will get you off the ground. I highly recommend for beginners, those trying to get back into web technologies, and those who have a footing but need to quickly learn Drupal 8.
I don't have a CompSci or Web Development background but I've been playing with Drupal on and off for a couple of years (starting with Drupal 7) and have read a couple of 'beginner' books. As a project manager I'm just trying to understand the basics, but I was never able to get to a point after reading those books where I thought I was at least using some of the functionality that makes Drupal a good platform. Installing Drupal on your own local server has gotten rather complex over the years and the fact that this book partners with a company to get you on a hosted environment out of the box really helps you get right to learning the Drupal GUI.It took me about 2 months to get through the book mainly because I was really trying to build out what I was learning in the exercises into a real application, using real content, as I was going along. In hindsight, I'm not sure I would do that again for 2 reasons: 1) Pantheon, the hosting service, while seems to be a great service, is expensive. I'm not saying it isn't worth it for someone who can't deal with building an environment from scratch however; 2) Now that I have all that content on Pantheon, it might take a bit to migrate to another host if I decide to go that way. Maybe I would suggest to dig deeper with more robust content for certain exercises to get a better grasp, but don't go crazy trying to build a real website out of the box.I definitely recommend the book; it's concise, easily read, and has me very curious on where to go from here.

This is a well written book that walks you through an entire simple site build allowing you to get a grasp on the basic Drupal concepts. The step by step instructions are clear and concise including screen shots for clarity. If there was anything I could say that could be considered constructive criticism would be that the book could use a little more explanation of the very confusing Drupal vocabulary as it pertains to nodes, entities and taxonomy. The book touches on this in bits and pieces but, still leaves some of the details a little fuzzy. The company that supports the book, OSTraining has written many online tutorials to help you along the way and Steve's grasp of the use and development of Drupal sites is phenomenal. I had a question at one point in the book and he personally contacted me to make sure I could get it figured out. The support was excellent. I cannot say enough good things about this book and the associated website. They offer a monthly subscription for their books as well as their videos and it includes training on other content management systems such as Joomla and Wordpress. But, back to the book. I was able to go through the book cover to cover and now I feel as if I have a solid grasp of the basics of Drupal. Months of "Googling" didn't get me to the level of clarity this book did in just a few days. Thank you Steve, Cindy and the entire OSTraining Team. You guys are knocking it out of the park.

This book is really very good to start a new Drupal site for beginers or even whom need to understand structure of Drupal for development.
I think it is easy to follow. My problem as usual is getting enough time to follow the info and put it to use.
