When I purchased this book I had no idea who Lilly Singh was, I just knew she had super cool hair. As I read the book, I truly learned a ton, not only about who Lilly Singh is, but about YouTube - a social media outlet that I had never really used (but quickly realized I should). Ms. Singh’s conversational tone spoke to me.In a time when I am finding myself in more and more uncomfortable situations I take her advice to heart. For instance, as an author and inventor of a new baby product I have begun to get offers to do interviews with the media. I was even recently contacted by a casting director to be on a reality show.I typically don’t feel much like a bawse, so even the idea of speaking on camera freaks me out. I don’t even like to Skype or FaceTime with friends and family.As these appointments approached, I tried desperately to remember her advice about expanding out of your comfort zone. I struggled to show some sort of personality while interviewing for the reality show. I then studied her words prior to having my first media appearance on a news talk show. While I don’t think I succeeded in appearing as even a fraction of a bawse on either occasion, at least I tried. As tempted as I was to cancel both appointments, I showed up and did them. As Ms. Singh points out, the first ten times she does anything she is horrible at it. But those first ten times are crucial in order for her to be successful the eleventh time. I recognize that these are experiences that will help me to grow as a person. You must seek out situations that make you uncomfortable.Her book inspired me to start my own YouTube channel. Granted I can’t dance or sing (or perform in any way), but I can promote my books and products. I can also cook, so I’ve started my own weekly cooking “showâ€. It’s a start, anyway, and I can honestly say I was inspired by Lilly Singh.Now if you'll please excuse me - I must go buy some colorful towels.
Although I love Lilly Singh's vlog, movie, and lipstick, I was a little concerned that this book would be so filled with pop cultural references that the meat might get obscured. Happily not, and I should have known better! The book is interesting, fast-paced, and Lilly's tone comes through in every line. In addition, I love a woman who is not afraid to use semicolons correctly.
I haven't have finished this book yet, but it has already changed my life. I'm a 36 years young woman who found love with Lilly's positivity. I wanted to book because I'm looking forward to making big changes in my life and you the motivation. I have a 10 year old who was diagnosed with ADHD. We've been having issues with discipline and teaching him self-love. He read the first chapter because it was titled "Nintendo". This kid loves his video games. Because of her analogy, I was able to explain to my son that I was his Game Designer. When I set rules I am not the enemy. I am only making the rules to give him more skills and character. Now when we fight I remind him that I am not trying to hurt him I'm trying to grow him. Fights don't last long and he goes to bed reading "How to be a Bawse" every night! I think I'm going to have to order another book if I am going to read it.
I wasn't a fan of Lilly Singh at the time that I ordered and read this book. I can understand if some people are thrown off by the way the book reads, because it reads as if she is talking directly to the reader. To be honest, that method is very good and useful for books like this. Therefore after the first chapter I was fine and enjoyed how it read. I was pleased with the format. Within each chapter the reader will find a witty intro, very good sound advice, and wonderful examples in the form of her experiences. All of the chapters were put into sections that had a common purpose and each section ended with two pages labeled "Out of the Blue". These pages probably have the most strength to give because they compare her old life to her current, they seemingly bare the most impact. I believe this book is truly life changing if you let it be, and full of those aha! moments that we all have but forget in life. I encourage you to read it, so that you can add being a Bawse to your resume of life and to give yourself a chance to conquer it. Additional side effects are becoming curious about the author, watching her videos, and becoming a huge fan of what she stands for and her as a person.
This book has genuinely got me off my ass. She's honestly someone that has EARNED this recognition and her book speaks to the value of what she's earned. Speaking totally truthfully- the book is written in a tone that if you don't already know how she speaks. it takes a moment to get use to but this tone specifically speaks to the positivity of following your dreams, all the while kicking your ass into gear. It's my favorite book by far and 100% worth your money. I ordered copies for all my friends in the hopes of helping them to also be inspired to change their lives for the best.Ps I have both the hard cover and the audio book... try to order the hard cover because the quality of the book is genuinely amazing - beautiful photos, quality pages, vivid colors. Absolutely worth the shipping and handling price.Update: I’ve reread it multiple times and have gotten a job where I can build a career as well as taken numerous certifions to help people in lives. I want to buy 100 copies of this book and hand it to random millennials I see. Lilly's message needs to be heard! As a boss in my professional life, I interview so many people who would be great for the job but end up not taking it because they "want more money than that" or they"want a managment position". You have to put in the work and earn those things! They don't just get handed to you! Lilly knows that and explains it sooooooo well in this book.Lilly changed my life when I started watching her YouTube videos almost 5 years ago. And now she's impacted me again with this beautiful gift. Do yourself a favor and read this book asap!
